Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
Now that you have a valid Belgian IBAN, run through these checks before pressing send.
- 01Confirm the legal beneficiary name as registered with the Belgian bank. Mismatches now trigger Verification of Payee rejections.
- 02SEPA payments inside the eurozone need the IBAN only. For inbound transfers from outside SEPA, pair it with the BIC.
- 03Decide between standard SEPA Credit Transfer (settles same or next day) and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (under 10 seconds, 24/7, mandatory across Belgian PSPs since October 2025).
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR. Belgian banks accept multi-currency accounts but charge FX margins on conversion.
- 05Send a small test for first-time beneficiaries, especially when paying suppliers or contractors.

IBAN Rules in Belgium
- 01IBAN has been mandatory for every domestic and SEPA credit transfer in Belgium since 1 February 2014.
- 02The Belgian IBAN is one of the shortest in Europe at 16 characters. It begins with BE, two check digits, a 3-digit bank code, a 7-digit account number, and two national check digits. The legacy Belgian Bank Account number (BBA) is embedded inside the IBAN, so it is no longer used as a standalone identifier.
- 03As a founding eurozone and SEPA member, Belgium uses the same IBAN for domestic Belgian payments, SEPA transfers across the eurozone, and SEPA Instant. There is no parallel local account format still in use.
Belgium Payment Schemes
Belgium's retail payments are run by CEC and the Eurosystem, with Bancontact dominating in-country card and mobile rails.

- 02CEC (Centre for Exchange and Clearing), private operator supervised by NBB, domestic retail clearing for SCT, SCT Inst, SDD, cards, and cheques. Instant payments settle within five seconds, 24/7/365.
- 03TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement.
- 04Bancontact, domestic debit card scheme, the most-used card in Belgium.
- 05Payconiq by Bancontact, mobile P2P and merchant payments, rebranding to Bancontact Pay in 2026.
- 06Wero, European Payments Initiative (EPI) wallet, launching across Belgian banks.
