Steps to validate an IBAN

There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.

  • 01
First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
  • 02
Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
  • 03
Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists

Found the correct IBAN, What to do next

Once you have the correct Bahraini IBAN, take these steps before sending.

  • 01
Match the beneficiary name to the exact form used by the Bahraini bank. CBB rules require name and IBAN to align.
  • 02
Pair the IBAN with the bank's SWIFT/BIC for any inbound cross-border payment.
  • 03
Pick a rail based on amount and urgency. Same-bank or BENEFIT-routed Fawri+ settles in under 30 seconds for amounts under BHD 1,000. Larger or commercial flows use Fawri or RTGS via UAEFTS-equivalent EFTS.
  • 04
Confirm whether the account is BHD-only or multi-currency (many corporate accounts in Bahrain hold USD).
  • 05
For high-value transfers, request a confirmation slip after settlement so reconciliation is clean.

IBAN Rules in Bahrain

  • 01
IBAN is mandatory in Bahrain for every domestic and cross-border electronic fund transfer, in force since the Central Bank of Bahrain mandated it on 1 July 2011.
  • 02
The 22-character Bahraini IBAN starts with BH, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code, and a 14-character account identifier. The format is enforced by CBB and applied by every retail and commercial bank.
  • 03
No legacy domestic-only account format remains in active use. Whether you are paying a Bahraini supplier in BHD, settling salaries through BENEFIT's EFTS, or receiving a wire from outside the GCC, the IBAN is the single identifier you need. Currency conversion to BHD happens at the receiving end if you remit in USD or EUR.

EFTS (Electronic Funds Transfer System), BENEFIT under CBB, interbank near-real-time fund transfers.
