Steps to validate an IBAN
There are two different validations that can be performed to ensure an UK IBAN is correct.
- 01First validation is done using the IBAN's Check Digits using the MOD97 algorithm.
- 02Second layer of validation can be carried out on the domestic sort code and account number combination
- 03Match the sort code against our Bank and Branch code directory to check if it exists
Found the correct IBAN, What to do next
With a valid Austrian IBAN in hand, follow these steps before initiating the transfer.
- 01Verify the beneficiary's exact registered name, since Austrian banks now apply Verification of Payee (VoP) checks on cross-border SEPA payments under EU Regulation 2024/886.
- 02For SEPA-area transfers, no SWIFT/BIC is needed. For non-SEPA inbound funds, pair the IBAN with the bank's BIC.
- 03Choose between standard SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer. Instant settles in under 10 seconds, 24/7.
- 04Confirm the account holds EUR if you are sending in another currency, otherwise pay conversion costs at the receiving bank.
- 05For large invoices, send a low-value verification transfer first.

IBAN Rules in Austria
- 01IBAN has been mandatory for every domestic and SEPA payment in Austria since the SEPA migration deadline of 1 February 2014.
- 02The 20-character Austrian IBAN starts with AT, two check digits, a 5-digit Bankleitzahl (BLZ) bank code, and an 11-digit account number. The legacy BLZ plus account number is now embedded inside the IBAN, so customers no longer use it standalone.
- 03Austria is a founding eurozone and SEPA member, which means the same IBAN works seamlessly for domestic payments, payments across all 36 SEPA countries, and SEPA Instant Credit Transfers. There is no parallel local account system in active use.
Austria Payment Schemes
Austria's payment landscape sits within the wider Eurosystem infrastructure, operated under OeNB oversight.
- 01T2, Eurosystem (Banque de France, Deutsche Bundesbank, Banca d'Italia, with OeNB as participant), RTGS for high-value euro settlement, replaced TARGET2 on 20 March 2023.
- 02HOAM.AT, Oesterreichische Nationalbank, OeNB internal booking platform for liquidity transfers, standing facilities, and minimum reserves.
- 03PSA Clearing Service, Payment Services Austria GmbH, SEPA clearing house for SCT, SDD, and SCT Inst, live since June 2023.
- 04TIPS, Eurosystem, pan-European instant payment settlement layer.
- 05SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT), SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), and SEPA Direct Debit (SDD).
