Introduction
Freelancers and independent contractors receiving payments through platforms like Upwork often ask whether Xflow is compatible with their existing setup, and more specifically, whether linking a virtual bank account creates any risk to their platform account. This post addresses both questions directly.
Yes, Xflow works with Upwork
Xflow is compatible with Upwork. The process works because Xflow issues a US Virtual Bank Account Number, which Upwork accepts as a valid withdrawal destination. To set it up, you add your Xflow VBAN as a US bank account in the payment methods section of your Upwork profile. Approval typically takes 24 to 36 hours. Once approved, withdrawals from Upwork flow into your Xflow virtual account, where you can convert to INR and credit your Indian bank account.
There is no additional compliance requirement on your end. Xflow handles the regulatory obligations on its side. The process is the same as adding any US bank account to your Upwork profile.
The one thing to get right: account name
The most important thing to understand before linking your Xflow account to Upwork is that the name on your Xflow account must match the name on your Upwork account exactly. Upwork performs a name verification before approving a bank account. If there is a mismatch, the account will not be approved, and a persistent mismatch can result in Upwork suspending the payment method.
This comes up most often in two scenarios:
Freelancers operating as individuals on Upwork but opening a business account on Xflow. If your Upwork account is in your personal name but your Xflow account is registered under a company name, the names will not match. The solution is to open your Xflow account under the same entity type you use on Upwork. If you operate as an individual freelancer on Upwork, open an individual account on Xflow. If you operate as a sole proprietorship, open a sole proprietorship account on Xflow.
Businesses whose registered company name differs from their trading name. If your Upwork account uses a brand name and your Xflow account is registered under the legal entity name, they must still match. Use the same name across both platforms.
The rule is straightforward: whatever name is on your Upwork account is the name your Xflow account must be registered under.
What about other freelance platforms?
Xflow works with any freelance or payments platform that allows you to add a US bank account as a withdrawal destination. The VBAN issued by Xflow functions as a standard US bank account from the platform's perspective.
Platforms that do not currently support US bank account addition cannot be linked to Xflow, not because of a limitation on Xflow's side, but because those platforms do not offer the option to add external bank details. If and when those platforms add US bank account support, they would be compatible with Xflow.
If you are unsure whether a specific platform supports US bank accounts, check the payment methods or withdrawal settings within your account, or contact the platform's support team.
